Will Flexco Pull-Out Steps Work for You?

Pull-out steps are typically installed on travel trailers. The Flexco pull-out steps from Stromberg Carlson are easy to install and fold up underneath the camper for simple storage. To ensure you choose the correct size for your application, there are a few measurements you will need to take.

Mounting Bracket Stromberg

The Lippert pull-out steps attach to the underside of the camper chassis, directly beneath the doorway. To decide which size you'll need, locate the space available underneath your camper that lines up with the door frame, and measure the width and depth. You will need a mounting space that is at least 24-1/4" wide and 14" deep.

If it turns out you have more or less space beneath your doorway, there are other step assemblies available with bracket sizes ranging from 21-1/16" wide to 28-1/4" wide. A full list of the available steps is below.

Outriggers for RV Steps

Outriggers - metal brackets that act as an extension (LC301704 - sold separately) - may be needed for installation depending on the model of your original stairs. These provide extra length if the old steps are longer or wider than the new.

Once you know where the mounting bracket will go and what size mounting bracket you need, that spot will be used as the "mounting point" to determine how many steps you will need.

How Many Steps Do You Need?

Entry Height Stromberg

To determine how many steps you'll need, measure from the mounting point to the ground. This is called the entry height. The entry height should roughly match the height of the steps when they're fully extended, plus 3" to 9" to account for the drop from the bottom steps to the ground. This measurement will also tell you how many steps you need.

The chart below displays mounting bracket width measurements in the first column and entry height measurements in the second column. The third column shows the corresponding part numbers. Use the mounting bracket width and entry height measurements you took to determine which part number will fit your RV. Choose the bracket size that is closest to your measurements without going over.

This page's step assembly is in bold text.

Mounting Bracket Width Entry Height Part Number
21-1/16" 14-1/2" - 17-1/2" SMFP-1120
23-5/8" 19" - 22" SMFP-2120
24-1/4" 10-1/2" - 13-1/2" SMFP-1220
25" 14-1/2" - 17-1/2" SMFP-1100
26" 19" - 22" SMFP-2100
27-1/8" 30" - 33" SMFP-3200L
28-1/8" 26" - 29" SMFP-3100
28-1/8" 34" - 37" SMFP-4400
28-1/4" 10-1/2" - 13-1/2" SMFP-1200

How Do You Install the Steps?

To install the steps:

  1. Make sure the camper is level on flat ground
  2. Lift the steps into the mounting space and prop into place
  3. If needed, mark the mounting holes on the camper and drill

    -Set aside steps before drilling

  4. If needed, install the outriggers
  5. Align step mounting holes and secure in place with carriage bolts and flange lock nuts

-Make sure the bracket is backed up fully against the I-beam on the chassis

    -Hardware not included

  6. Tighten hardware until snug
  7. Make sure assembly is sitting square and level
  8. Torque the hardware tight

There is no complaints about this product! It was a great addition to my 6x12 enclosed work trailer's side door, and frankly, this should be a standard feature on any trailer like this. I never have a problem with this product "walking" its way to the extended position. The step always stays in place, retracted, until ready for use. It is never difficult to pull out or push back into place. And worst case, should I forget to push it back to the stowed position prior to getting on the road, the step does not stick out further than the tire, nor does the product hang down low enough to be a risk of catching on something and being torn off accidentally.
My reason for purchasing this product is that I stepped out of my trailer's side door one day onto uneven ground and rolled my ankle! Was down for about a month! Some people suggested a stool to keep in the trailer for this purpose. However, a stool sitting on uneven ground could still be just as dangerous as without it at all! So buy and install the step!
Installation of this step was fairly easy. One could opt to weld it to the frame of the trailer, but I chose to bolt mine. Depending on the frame configuration of your trailer, you may need an additional piece of steel, like angle iron, to install Be sure to used a locking type nut such as a nylock nut, not just or only lock washers. The outside frame of my trailer is a steel box beam, so you do not want to overtighten any bolts ran through this box beam. You can crush these beams! Again, another reason to use a locking type nut. See attached pics for further understanding of my description above, and for ideas for your own installation of this product.

Respectfully,

Bought this for my enclosed work trailer to place under my curbside entry door. I LOVE it! Easy to install, solid construction, looks great. I had a single 16" step up into and out of trailer, with this step I now have two 8" steps which when you are carrying heavy items out of the trailer all day long, it makes it so easy and probably saved me from twisting my ankles and abusing my knees on a daily basis. Worth every penny! Loved it so much a placed a larger/wider pull-out step at the rear double barn doors of the trailer, that was a little more work to install, but again worth every penny! If you don't want a ramp door at the rear of the trailer, adding a step is the perfect solution.

Well made, looks good, and has a non slip surface for safety!!

by:

The steps came as described and were a great fit for my '89 Jayco pop up. Easy to pull out and they lock in tight for travel. I drilled 3/8" holes in my frame and installation was easy with 3/8" bolts. Sturdy and economical also.

Product arrived in good shape, mounting took about 1/2 hour, works great. Thanks

by:

The etrailer experience is great. I have always had good luck with them, and their prices are usually the best. I ordered on Wednesday, and my order arrived on Friday! Amazing.

Oh, and the step itself is VERY high quality, made in USA, works great. I will be installing it on our camping van.

by:

I used them on my Ford F-250 utility bed. Mounted under bins to pull out to reach thing in bed of box

Perfect! Just what we needed for the small (12 ft) vintage camper we're remodeling.

Replacing a damaged step with the same product

My Coachmen Freelander Camper didn't have a step when purchased 11 years ago. I was much younger and never had a problem stepping up into the camper.Well now I have trouble until I found this step.Easy to install and plenty strong. Now I have no trouble getting in or out. Hard to believe 3'' makes such a difference.

Still going strong.Supports my 225 lbs. A very sturdy step.

I ordered this step for my Jayco popup camper, knowing, based on my own measurements, that it would have to be drilled for installation. I had searched every trailer step that Google could find and could not find a better fit, and their price was the most competitive, even after adding the cost of standard shipping. I expected about a week to receive it but the eTrailer customer service rep took it upon himself to expedite the order in house and it arrived at my door on the third business day.

The step both looks better and feels more stable than the oem step did when it was new. eTrailer delivers quality product quickly and is my go to resource for trailer parts.

by:

This is an excellent product. Sturdy! I am using them for a side step on a truck utility bed. I have mounted the step on the bottom of the utility bed. They stay securely tucked away while driving and pull out easily when needed.

by:

Item was as described during ordering. Shipped and delivered promptly. I ordered this to install as a step for the rear of a trailer that was challenging to step up on.
the fit was perfect, installation was a snap and it is made in the good ole USA.

by:

Etrailer.com shipped it very quickly, and it was a perfect replacement for the steps on my pop-up trailer. Thank you for putting the hole dimensions on the website picture, it really helped me make sure it would fit my camper. Thanks again...

by:

Product is sturdy and should work fine. Box came with only one piece of tape on end, like it had been opened and re-closed. No instructions or any product details, warranty, etc. nor any hardware (i.e. bolts, washers, nuts). not sure if any were intended, but definitely would be a nice to have.

by:

I bought these steps for our job trailers THAT THEY WORK GREAT

by:

The item arrived in good order.
However,
the traveling box containing my product was previously opened, and the one-step product was not wrap in plastic bag - which I had expected.
Overall, I am really excited to have this product, which will improve the
entry-excite operation into my food trailer.

by:

My husband bought this step for his enclosed race car trailer and he couldn't be more pleased. It was exactly what he was looking for and needed. Thank you!

by:

The stair is great haven't had any more issues at all thank you very much

by:

Rebuilding an old rv trailer into a storage trailer. This fit just right and though it doesn't go down much it works.

by:

Not only is this a great product, but the ordering experience was extremely helpful. This company goes the extra mile to satisfy its customers. First time experience and it was great. I will certainly use them again and recommend to my other friends and family.

by:

As described. The dimensions given on etrailer .com were very helpful in determining which step to purchase and they were accurate.

by:

Product is good quality. Due to the age of my camper the bolt holes do not line up so we will have to spot weld it in place as the add mentioned. no problem. quick shipping...

by:

Got it within a week. No more portable steps taking up space. Yea team!

by:
